Addressing Math Learning Gaps

Parents of Students in Grades 6-8
This class will review the sequencing of math topics in grades 6-8 and provide insight into prior knowledge that is required for the different topics, as well as how to build a strong foundation to fill in gaps from previous years. Parents will be provided with a variety of strategies to help their children improve their understanding of mathematics including a review of key concepts and topics, topic sequence, and strategies for helping to support students as they fill in learning gaps.

This class will focus on the main topics included on the Algebra Regents, as well as strategies and resources to help your child prepare for success. Calculator tips and tricks will also be shared.

This workshop will act as a guide to help parents understand Common Core Math Standards and why NYS is adopting the Next Generation Math Standards. You will learn the benefits and mishaps that have occurred with adoption and implementation of the Common Core Math Standards. This workshop will help to inform parents of the purpose of the NYS Mathematics Testing Program and provide a deeper understanding to its components. Parents will explore the purpose of the state tests and their administration. Parents will see what types of questions are asked as well as examples. Lastly, parents will understand their child¡¯s performance level and how to decode the student score report. Attached is a link to access parent resources located on the last page.

This workshop will help to inform parents of the difficulties many students have with mathematics as well as several strategies that can be incorporated to a student¡¯s everyday routine in an effort to improve student success. There is a clip in this video that is very detailed and informative on how to take effective notes that is extremely helpful. It is encouraged to have your child sit and view this video with you and they will benefit from the information provided within.

This workshop will help to inform parents of the importance of incorporating math into everyday life. Parents will explore numeracy and its development with young children, as well as the importance of numeracy development regarding a child¡¯s future academic success. Parents will see examples of how to incorporate math into conversation and daily life with elementary aged children in order to build strong foundational math skills, which is vital for student success.
